Brag Doc

My promotion packet for myself.

A brag doc is a running log of accomplishments engineers keep for performance reviews. Mine is personal: things I've done, lived, played, and overcome.

  • I have a fiancée that I love very much.
  • We have three cats: Zuko, Bodie, Mallory.
  • I am Ukrainian.
  • I've been hosting a website since 2014.
  • I use Vim btw, since 2017.
  • I type > 110 wpm. I was so good in Middle School I got accused of "hacking" our computer typing software by our teacher.
  • I've been skydiving. It was a fun new-team hire event.
  • I've also been parasailing, with my family in Florida.

Career

I've worked on consumer products at Google and Garmin.

Google:

Garmin:

A few things I'm proud of:

  • I got an LGTM from Sanjay Ghemawat, a Google Senior Fellow behind MapReduce, Bigtable, and Spanner, on a change fixing company-wide docs.
  • I logged 327,010 steps over 18 days in Garmin's Scale the Summits step challenge, finishing #16 of 200+ (team Maposaurus, top 5 of 40+). I averaged ~18,200 a day and peaked at 24,974.
  • I win trivia pretty much everywhere I've been: Garmin new-hire orientation, Google's Noogler orientation, and the Google Beam summit.

College

I graduated with a BS in Computer Science from Missouri University of Science and Technology in 2018. S&T is a STEM-focused public research university in Rolla, Missouri, formerly the Missouri School of Mines.

Interests

Hobbies are important. They're my way to reconnect to the analog world from the digital one. I enjoy:

Health

I take health very seriously. As Arnold Schwarzenegger put it:

A well-built physique is a status symbol. It reflects you worked hard for it, no money can buy it. You cannot borrow it, you cannot inherit it, you cannot steal it. You cannot hold onto it without constant work. It shows discipline, it shows self-respect, it shows patience, work ethic, and passion.

Lifting

I made friends with some meat-heads in college, they taught me everything I know. Then I wrecked my car, and took a lifting hiatus. After college, I got back into lifting. Then the pandemic happened. Nowadays I try to lift regularly to keep up my strength.

Some of my PRs throughout the years:

  • Bench (~75 kg) 165 lb
  • Deadlift (~130 kg) 285 lb
  • Squat (~81 kg) 180 lb

Running

I began running in middle school. One of my friends joined cross country, to condition for basketball the following season. So I joined too. My coach immediately pegged me as a "bull coming out of a gate": fast, wild tempered, with erratic form.

In high school I managed to get to state 2x: both times as an individual (top 15 in the district) and once as a top team (top 2). I ended up medaling every meet, except for state championships: I reached 46/166 in 2011 and 41/166 in 2012.

In college I was riddled with injuries; the only race I had completed was the racewalk. I stopped racing in college to give more focus to my academic work.

PRs:

NBA

I've been a fan of the NBA since around 2006: prime Kobe era. Because there was no professional team where I was growing up, I felt like I got to pick one. I chose the Lakers, and I have been a die-hard fan since.

I've made it a bucket list item to visit every NBA arena, so far I'm 3/30:

  1. Kings Golden 1 Center Domantas Sabonis, Harrison Barnes
  2. Warriors Chase Center Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green
  3. Lakers Crypto.com Arena Luka Dončić, LeBron James, Austin Reaves

Video Games

I started playing video games when I was four years old, with Quake and Doom. They taught me how to use a keyboard and mouse.

As I grew up, I became a console gamer: Nintendo 64, Gameboy, PS2, Xbox 360. Then I went to college, and video games took a hiatus. That didn't change until around 2021, when I got my first Switch. It was a game changer.

Here are some notable games I've beaten that shaped me.

  • Super Mario 64, Super Mario 2, Super Mario World
